Brill 78371 Razorcut 38 15-Inch 5-Blade Push Reel Lawn Mower Review
I really wonder what all the fuss is about. I grew up pushing my dad's very heavy reel mower, so when my electric died on me, I did my research and decided I'd go for the Brill. I'd guess I cut both my lawns in half the time with this machine, as you can cut at a quicker pace, it's less heavy to turn, no wire to worry about, and you can pick it up with one hand once you're done. I've already allowed my 6 year old daughter to try it out (the handle has to be held a little high for her, but otherwise she can manage it). Little twigs will stop you in your tracks, but it's a simple thing to clear them from the blade. And it's so quiet. This is an easy mower to recommend.

Not worth the money. - Clinton L. Bast -
Many of my praises and complaints about this mower may apply to all reel mowers. I don't know for sure since I've never really used other reel mowers.br /br /PROS:br /- clean. br /No more smelling like the exhaust from my 2-cycle lawn boy mower.br /br /- quiet. br /I no longer annoy neighbors if I mow at dinner time or early in the morning.br /br /- light. br /Lightest mower I've used. Easy to push. Way lighter than traditional reel mowers.br /br /- It always "starts"!br /br /- saves money on gas.br /br /- easy to just grab and go.br /br /br /CONS:br /- doesn't cut every blade of grass like a power mower.br /Lawn looks cut, but not smooth because of uncut grass blades. May have to make several passes.br /br /- doesn't cut well on bumpy terrain.br /br /- doesn't cut well in sparse grass.br /It seems to cut better on thick turf. In sparse grass, it often just rolls over the grass.br /br /- only cuts when moving forward.br /br /- mower gets stuck on sticksbr /br /- too light. br /It sometimes slides on top of the grass when you push it. A heavier mower would keep the wheels firmly planted on the ground.br /br /- cutting width is too narrowbr /Narrow width means more passes to cut the lawn.br /br /- maximum cutting height is too low.br /Where I live, they recommend leaving grass 2 to 3 inches high. The mower has a 1.8 inch maximum height.br /br /- The manual says not to sharpen the blades. Instead, buy a new blade reel.br /br /- Couldn't adjust the reel perfectly.br /If I set the gap between the reel blades and cutting bar on each side of the mower to the proper width, the middle of some of the reel blades would hit the cutting bar. If I set it up so the blades make no contact at all with the cutting bar, then it doesn't cut grass very well. I end up setting the width so that some of the blades barely hit the cutting bar. br /br /- Have to adjust reel after every mowing even though they say I should only have to adjust it once a season.br /br /- EXPENSIVE!!! I could buy a new power mower for the same price and get a much better cut. Definitely NOT worth the money!br /br /Even though I have a lot of complaints about the mower, I use it almost exclusively just because the mowing experience is much more pleasant than using a dirty, noisy power mower. It's nice that my kids can play in the yard while I'm mowing without fear of them getting pelted by debris. I've just learned to lower my expectations and accept a less-than-perfect cut.br /br /Proponents of reel mowers say that the "shearing" cut of a reel mower is healthier for the grass than the "tearing" cut of a rotary power mower. After one lawn cutting season, I can't necessarily tell if the lawn looks healthier or not compared to the rotary power mower.br /br /Would I buy it again? Probably not, unless it was priced at 0 or less like many other reel mowers. I'd like to try some other reel mowers to see how it compares. If all reel mowers cut lousy, like Consumer Reports seems to suggest, then I'd like to try a rechargeable battery-powered mower.br /br /br /br /
Brill Push Mower just the ticket for a small yard - Eric G. Hall - Irvine, CA
I've owned the Brill Luxus 38 model for about five years now and really like it. My yard is rather small so getting a gas mower just didn't make sense. I used to have a huge yard in Michigan and felt the gas powered mulching mower was ideal. My grass is St. Augustine, so it's pretty tough stuff and the Brill makes short work of it. I read another reviewer say they don't like tall thick grass and that is true, so you want to keep on top of your yard and cut it at least once a week if not more in the heat of the summer. I've seen those other push mowers and they just don't seem to be made as well, cut as precisely or hold up over time as well as the Brill.
