I purchased this mower from a local retailer to cut my bermuda grass lawn. I don't want to have to break out the big mower anytime the grass needed mowing, and my neighbors like to play in the pools and have barbecues a lot, so I needed something quieter that I could use even in the early hours of the morning.br /br /I think this mower is a little more difficult to push than a regular gas or electric mower, but not much. The main problems with a mower like this are:br /br /1. It doesn't work well when the grass has grown tall. You'll need to mow more often. In return, you'll have a nice, green lawn.br /br /2. Sometimes you have to go over the same patch of grass twice to get it all. I think this is pretty standard for manual reel mowers, but nevertheless this is why I'm giving it only 4 stars out of 5.br /br /3. It doesn't get the edges very well. You'll need a weed trimmer more than you would have otherwise. But I use one even with my regular mower, so it doesn't matter to me.br /br /Contrary to what some sources say, manual reel mowers are fine for dense grasses like bermuda, provided you get the right type. The 7-bladed reel mowers like this one are designed for bermuda and other "bent" grasses.

Great States works great - Adam C. Treen - Fort Riley, KS
I bought this mower because we moved to a townhouse with a small yard AND because it is a much greener alternative to gasoline mowers. This mower works exactly as advertised, and exactly as I remember them working when I was a kid. Thick grass (like big crab grass clumps) will stop it dead if you don't put some speed behind your push, and it won't cut anything taller than six inches. If you are used to lining up your wheel marks for your next pass, that is different too, because the wheels are outside of your cutting path. These are, in my opinion, fair trade-offs for being able to cut my grass in near silence whenever I want with ZERO emissions and no noise pollution.

Quiet and works well - S. Kurup -
I have a fairly small lawn(about 6000sq ft) of bermuda grass. I used the default factory setting and it wasnt cutting much. I adjusted the height to the lowest possible and my lawn looks a lot better now. Like the previous reviewer said you will need an edger/trimmer.

I recently moved to a rental house from an apartment building. There was no sheltered outside space to store a gas mower, and after reading reviews on Amazon, I got this one. After mowing, I just carry it down to the basement. br /br /Set up is a snap. It took me literally 5 minutes and then....thats it! Just mow! br /br /If your grass is rather long, you will have to do it twice the first time to get everything. The cut is not a perfect uniform cut, as you would expect from a gas powered mower. When done, the lawn looks like it was mowed a couple days ago. As other reviewers said, you will have to do some trimming, as the mower leaves about a 2 inch gap between the wheel and the cutting reel. I picked up a little cordless electric trimmer for that duty.br /br /Beware! If you do not want attention from your neighbors don't buy this mower!!! Within 2 times mowing, I had met most of my neighbors, and also figured out which ones were jerks and who the unruly kids in the area were. You will attract attention with your brand new "antique" mower.

Good, but has some limitations. I'd recommend another model. - C. Whinney - PA United States
I bought a home a few months ago and only had the chance to mow a few times with my gas mower a before the motor went on it. It was about 20 years old, so no real surprise, but obviously I needed to get my lawn mowed. I ran out to a local supply store, and decided on a reel mower since this way my girlfriend would be able to carry it up the steps from the back of my house where the garage is to the front lawn just in case I was away.br /br /This was the only reel mower that they had, and being impatient that day as the lawn was about 6" long, I just purchased it and went on my way. After using it for about 10 mows, I've noticed some good and bad...br /br /Good:br /-Blades seem VERY sharp. I've even dinged a couple large rocks with it and they still cut evenly.br /-I've had no problems with an "uneven mow" as the other reviewers noted. My strategy for this is to re-mow about 1/2 the track that I've already mowed. My lawn looks beautifully freshly cut using this method.br /-Lightweight is great. I was away on business for 2 weeks and my ~110lb girlfriend had no problems carrying it up the 8 steps from my garage to the front yard. That being said, all reel mowers are lightweight, so I don't think that this is particularly good or bad for this model.br /br /Bad:br /-The 3+" gap that doesn't get mowed between the wheel and the blade is definitely annoying. I used to bring out the weed-wacker about every 3rd mow just to edge the sidewalks, while I now have to just about every mow since the uncut gap between the rocks around my landscaping and the rest of the lawn is so obvious. Admittedly, I don't know if this is a standard issue with reel mowers or not.br /-You can only raise the mower to about 1.5-1.75". I never considered this before, but after doing resarch, regularly mowing your grass to under 2-2.5" promotes clover and weed growth. When I first got the mower, my lawn had a clover patch here or there, and a few random weeds. Now they're much more prevalent. I'm also not sure if it's actually possible to get it up to the 1.75" mark. The way that you raise and lower it depends on two plastic pieces holding the "adjustable roller" in place, and when I adjusted them out to the furthest they would go, the roller fell off a couple times in the middle of mowing. I have them set to one mark in now, which holds the roller steadily in place, but I have a feeling it's only at 1.5" now.br /br /Everything considered, it seems like the mower has high quality parts, but there are just a few design considerations that were made on it that would push me to recommend a higher model. If I were to purchase a new one, I'd probably go with the 815-18 for the whopping more. I have a feeling by the end of the summer I'll be buying the 815 and selling the 404-16 on Craigslist.br /br /br /br /Update - After 2 more weeks of use, I now have crabgrass all over the place, almost covering my entire lawn. Research tells me that it is crabgrass "germination season" and one of the best things you can do to prevent it is to cut your lawn 2.5-3", so I blame the mower. If you're in the North East where crab grass and clover are problems, I definitely wouldn't recommend this mower.

hmm - oxsoldiersgirlxo - CO
Id rate it higher except I cant seem to get it put together to even use

Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower Review

I read the various reviews of the Scotts 20" push reel mower before purchasing and the negative ones did give me pause. My yard is slightly uneven with some dips and it has two or three different kinds of grass; okay, I'm not a landscaper. I took a chance because I wanted to get away from the gas mower with its fumes when running and the fuel smells when stored in the garage. Like a car, the gas mower required maintenance, took up space, and was noisy.br /br /I purchased the Scotts push reel mower and have been very pleased. It is very easy to push - it is lighter than a gas mower and is easier to turn around - and the cut on the grass is decidedly better than the rotary gas mower. It looks clean, clipped, and very nice. It was easy to push and it folds up for storage against the wall in garage. The only negative - and not worth a lower star - is that it won 't pick up leaves, but I have a rake and I'll trade the quiet of raking and non-motorized mowing to the noise and belching fumes of a gas mower anytime. Bottom line: a very good cut and worth the price.

Just OK - Wade Tom - Alexandria, VA
I bought the Scotts 20 inch reel mower last summer based upon positive reviews and a wish to be environmentally responsible. We have a small yard (two to three thousand square feet) and at the time I figured the Scotts mower would be enough. Assembly was straight forward and I was initially pleased with the mowers result...maybe I was in denial? As the summer moved along, I began to regret my enviromentally responsible purchase. I had only ever used gas mowers and expected that a pass would neatly cut the grass. The Scotts mower pretty much never resulted in a clean pass. There always seemed to be a couple of dozen stubborn grass shoots still standing, resulting in additional passes. Don't expect the Scotts mower to edge the area cut, you'll need to weed eat. By the end of the summer I had given up. I wouldn't bother with second and third passes, instead opting to pull the stray shoots by hand. The handle had torn (most likely my fault) and the frame of the mower felt loose, despite tightening. I'm giving in this summer and replacing the reel with a corded mower. If you're looking to simply trim the grass and don't care about appearance, then the Scotts mower may be a good choice for you. If you want a neat, clean cut, look elsewhere.

McCulloch MCM2013 20-Inch Push Reel Mower

McCulloch MCM2013 20-Inch Push Reel Mower Review

I can't believe how much bogus information is out there on reel mowers. Let me say that I read every single review on every single 20 inch reel mower on every site that sells them and one still finds it difficult to decide. Even the manufacturers' sites are horrible in terms of product information. Many of the retailers (not Amazon) push the Brill's and you have to question their advice when that's all they sell. The Brill's and other "high-end" no contact mowers are a lot more expensive, made of a lot of plastic, and are too small. Anyway, back to the McCulloch. First, I was attracted to reel mowers due to their simplicity, durability, and for some, their price. I'm not an enviro wheenie, just someone who appreciates a good, solid, product that works. Next, and after reading a ton of reviews, I decided I wanted a 20 inch mower. No matter what brand or model, most people complained that they which they bought a bigger model. Buying the 20" models limits your choices. The big seller is the Scotts and by most accounts it's a decent product. However, I was turned off by the fact that the gears in the wheels are made of plastic. To me, that was a deal breaker, especially after reading how some user's broke only after one season. Not a good design. The Gimour was next, but I've read a good bit of unfavorable reviews on it to. The big selling point is that it comes with a grass catcher that most users said was totally useless. So, the other choice I saw was the McCulloch. It had the 20" cut, all steel gears, and I read it was US made. I can vouch that it is 20", does have steel gears, but it is made in Taiwan, not the US. Also, that manufacturer site say it has 4 blades, nope - this has 5 blades. I got it today, put it together in 5 minutes, and then used it (it was real easy and the instructions were fine). I used to take me 30 to 45 minutes with my gas mower (I really move though) and it took me about the same time, maybe 5 minutes more. In terms of difficulty mowing, I just didn't see it. My gas mower was a 5.5hp, non self propelled Yardman (a Walmart special that ran fantastic I might add). It was different-I think this mower uses more arms, but less back (a good thing for me-I'm a fit 37 yo male). In terms of cut, I pulled it right outside of the box, attached the handle and mowed - no adjustments, and it mowed fine. I was preparing for the worst and was really surprised at how well it mowed and my yard is a mess of every crab grass, dandelion, chickweed, you name it, I have it. My yard is not flat either. Mowing was really easy and fun. I don't know if the fun will wear off, but it was. What kills me, is that I mowed in flip flops - something I never would have done with my gas mower. It was great, my 2 year old daughter was even out playing on the swing set. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. When compared to the Scotts, it seems like a better deal - same cutting width, same 5 blades, all steel gears vs plastic on the Scotts, and this handle is quite sturdy - no flimsy at all. Even though it looks like a Scotts (made by American Lawn, but built in China), I called American Lawn Mower and asked their customer service and the girl said "No, it isn't made by us". If you are thinking about getting one of these, I wouldn't hesitate to make the jump - at this price and with Amazon's backing, this is a great mower I'm glad I bought. Sorry for the run on, but there is a lot of bad info out there and I want to help out. Good luck. The environmentally friendly McCulloch MCM 2013 20 inch Push Reel Mower has ball bearing blade spindles making it easy to push and safe to use.

Works as it is designed to - Gordon T. Eldridge - Lexington, MS United States
I have been using reel mowers now for about five years and this one works as well as or better than some I have tried. The Scotts reel mower did not cut nearly as well as this one. It arrived Friday afternoon and on Saturday morning I put it together, re-adjusted the wheels and had my yard cut in about an hour on its lowest setting. Sure, twigs do stop it, but they stop other reel-type mowers as well. As long as you know the limitations of the equipment it is a very economical and less polluting way to cut your yard. I don't see myself using anything else, since I don't plan on moving to an area where I have a bigger yard to cut.

I really wanted it to worck but it did not - cage88mom - Texas
I was really excited when this mower came but noticed some fishy things right away like the roller assembly was on the wrong bolt hole and the cutting blades were not properly adjusted the reasons for these quirks were that two of the blades were longer than the other three which would have been obvious if the blades had been adjusted from the factory and the other bolt holes were drilled to small for the specialized bolts that hold the roller assembly on which is why the roller was on the wrong hole and yes i checked for over spray so i figure the quality control guy was not there when this mower came of the line

I really wonder what all the fuss is about. I grew up pushing my dad's very heavy reel mower, so when my electric died on me, I did my research and decided I'd go for the Brill. I'd guess I cut both my lawns in half the time with this machine, as you can cut at a quicker pace, it's less heavy to turn, no wire to worry about, and you can pick it up with one hand once you're done. I've already allowed my 6 year old daughter to try it out (the handle has to be held a little high for her, but otherwise she can manage it). Little twigs will stop you in your tracks, but it's a simple thing to clear them from the blade. And it's so quiet. This is an easy mower to recommend.

Brill 78371 Razorcut 38 15-Inch 5-Blade Push Reel Lawn Mower Feature

  • Non-contact cutting system keeps blades sharp for 8 years
  • Weighs only 17 pounds
  • Europe's #1 reel mower
  • Environmentally friendly - no gas or fumes
  • Exceptionally quiet and safe to use
The Razorcut 38 is the lightest weight and easiest push mower that we've found. It arrives fully assembled and ready to cut. The 5 hardened steel welded blades remain sharp for at least 10 years of mowing. Guaranteed to cut smoothly, evenly and easily every time.

Brill Push Mower just the ticket for a small yard - Eric G. Hall - Irvine, CA
I've owned the Brill Luxus 38 model for about five years now and really like it. My yard is rather small so getting a gas mower just didn't make sense. I used to have a huge yard in Michigan and felt the gas powered mulching mower was ideal. My grass is St. Augustine, so it's pretty tough stuff and the Brill makes short work of it. I read another reviewer say they don't like tall thick grass and that is true, so you want to keep on top of your yard and cut it at least once a week if not more in the heat of the summer. I've seen those other push mowers and they just don't seem to be made as well, cut as precisely or hold up over time as well as the Brill.

American Lawn Mower Company 1204-14 14-Inch Deluxe Hand Reel Mower Review

I almost didn't buy this lawn mower because of some of the negative reviews about handles, etc. But the cheapo in me came back and snapped it up after seeing that used ones on Craigslist cost the same amount. My little lawn really needed a chop. When it arrived I put it together in about 5 min, simple no tools. I'm totally happy with the purchase, love cutting my small lawn, the sound, the feel, its light and easy to handle no gas stink or fouled plugs. Push and your done. It rolls over little twigs that others were complaining about. I live in the redwoods. You should rake your lawn anyway otherwise the twigs and leaves create a patchy clumpy lawn. No reason not to get this for the price. Unless you want the catch bag.

American Lawn Mower Company 1204-14 14-Inch Deluxe Hand Reel Mower Feature

  • Deluxe hand-reel mower ideal for most turf grasses
  • Provides a clean, precise, scissor-like cut
  • Includes alloy steel construction; assembly required
  • 8-1/2-inch diameter high impact, polymer wheels; 3-spider 1-blade reel; adjustable roller
  • 1/2- to 1-1/2-inch cutting height; 14-inch cutting width; 19 pounds in weight; limited 90-day warranty
When it comes to hand-pushed reel mowers, what you want is low cost and high efficiency. That's what you get with the Great States push reel lawn mower. Though they call it their "Deluxe Hand Reel Mower," there's not much that's deluxe about it, but its simplicity is one of its nice features. When you're pushing a hand mower, fancy attachments are not what you're really after. Strength and easy maneuverability are more important, and the simplicity of the hand reel mower design, with its three height adjustment settings, allows you to do the job and get on with your weekend. The alloy steel reel and bed knife blades are sharp and strong, and, though the mower is light enough to carry, it's got enough heft for proper traction on slick grass. Assembly is easy enough--it doesn't take more than 10 minutes--and there's a limited 90-day warranty. The Great States 14-inch deluxe hand-reel mower provides a clean, precise, scissor-like cut for most turf grasses -- especially for cool-season grasses such as bluegrass, fescue and rye. With a cutting width of 14 inches and a a cutting height of 1/2- to 1-1/2 inches, the mower has 8-1/2-inch diameter high impact, polymer wheels with integral molded tread. It includes a three-spider one-blade reel, an alloy steel reel, a bed knife blade, and an adjustable, three-section roller. The zinc-plated handle has plastic grips for greater comfort. Assembly is required for this unit. To assure a precise, fine cut, each American/Great States feel mower must pass inspection by cutting paper 1/3000-inch thick -- much thinner than a blade of grass. The mower weighs 19 pounds and comes with a limited 90-day warranty.

My Wii Fit says, "Ouch" when I step on it - I'm 55 and obese. I used a self-propelled gas mower that dragged all my weight quickly down the narrow slopes of my half-acre lot and threaten to bash me into the fence at the bottom. Self-propelled can be scary and difficult to resist, especially on wet slopes. I hoped the reel mower would be safer and it is. I now use the reel mower for the entire front and side yards. br /br /If you impatiently want a perfectly cut lawn, this mower's cons may concern you: br / A few blades of grass are missed; more if the grass is tallbr / It takes 1.5 - 2 times as long as a self-propelled gas mower to mow the yardbr / It cuts as wide as the blades; not the tires (you get used to it)br / The blades need lightly lubed after each use; WD-40 works greatbr /br /If a few missed blades and more time are not an issue consider these pros:br / No noise loud enough to prevent an early morning mow br / No gas burnt or spilledbr / No oil burnt br / No smokebr / No dust or dirt stirred upbr / No power cord to chew throughbr / No pull cord to pull and pull br / No filter, spark plug or valves to replacebr / No battery to charge and push aroundbr / No control cables to stick, kink or breakbr / No projectilesbr / No muffler burns or added heatbr / No carbon monoxidebr / No shredded wood/plastic/metalbr / No carb cleanerbr / No lubing all the spring and lever linkages.br / Mom will not say, "You'll put your eye out" br / Stop it stopsbr / Light to carrybr / Easy to push and maneuverbr / Easy to adjust cut and wheel height br / No burned-up motorbr / No fighting the self-propel drivebr / No tip hazards - Injury, damage or oil in cylindersbr / Environmentalist will pass over your doorwaybr / Under 0br /br /BOTTOM LINE: Enjoyable change after 25 years of roaring gas engines. Do it for your ears!

Quality mower, just know the pros/cons of a reel mower. - A. J. Bhe - Sacramento, CA
Pros:br /-Solid construction.br /-Compact, relatively lightweight (~15 lbs), easy to hand carry, easy to push, easy to store.br /-Quiet.br /-Self-mulching, no heavy/PITA grass catcher bag to deal with.br /-No need to buy gas or oil, no need to crank start.br /-Cuts grass cleanly, adjustable cutting heights.br /br /Cons:br /-Cuts grass unevenly, depending on how long the blade of grass is. Often requires multiple passes at different angles to get an even cut. br /-Doesn't cut out to the wheels, requiring some overlap and makes it difficult to get at lawn edges if you have paver/stone edging.br /br /Overall:br /This is a good mower for someone with a small yard, or someone with a big yard who isn't too picky about having the perfectly manicured lawn. It's an energy efficient, environmentally/neighborhood friendly mower that will help keep your lawn healthy. It can be a little time inefficient depending on how picky you are about getting an even cut (basically how many passes at different angles you're willing to make). The reel mower design tends to push long blades of grass down (as opposed to getting sucked up into the blades like with a powered mower), so cutting grass that is more than about 1" longer than cut height requires multiple passes. (This mower works better with grass that is regularly cut.) It requires about as much effort to push as a non-propelled gas mower, and requires very little maintenance - just occasional blade sharpening and oiling.

My husband sold our gas mower when we hired a lawn service. I got rid of the lawn service when we replaced our backyard lawn with a deck, but I still have a small, shady front lawn that needs care. I don't like the noise and smells of gas mowers, so I thought I'd give this a try. It's wonderful! It arrived in three days and my 12 year old put it together in ten minutes. My 9 year old immediately used it to mow the overgrown front lawn, which took him less than five minutes. The mower is small and easy to maneuver and the blades are sharp and efficient. I was even able to trim the edges of the lawn easily. This is a simple, inexpensive, quick, and very effective replacement for a heavy, noisy, smelly gas mower. Highly recommended!

love my new mower! - shane - san diego
easy to put together. my 5'4 wife did it all on her own. i bought it for her since i wont be home. she can push it easily and loves the way it cuts. before buying it the grass got way over grown and now it is right where it should be. the blade is really sharp and cuts great. we ordered it through amazon and got it in 5 days with free shipping. bought the grass catcher to go with it which was easy to install and works great with this mower. my wife loves her new mower which is great for the enviroment and perfect for are little yard.

Tick Tick Tick Tick - Mikel R. Marcuse - Fort Mill, SC
Awesome little mower - has that great old tick tick tick sound when you push it - get lots of looks and comments from the neighbors. The width is a bit narrow so I would only recommend for smaller yards. Took a few times to get the blade adjustment right, but it is real easy to do. A sturdy well built piece of equipment!

American Lawn Mower Company 1415-16 16-Inch Hand Push Reel Mower Review

it is hard for me to understand all the poor reviews for this product. but of course some of us did not finish high school let alone college. how would anyone expect a push reel mower to pull grass up, like a gas lawn mower does, gee did they fail aerodynamics in there class, like the push mower might generate 300 rpm and the gas one maybe 3000 to 5000, so how would you expect the push mower to cut any thing but what was at the height of the blades. at the end of a row of course you have to slow down, to turn and go back. geez, common sense must be lacking in some of these reviews. and to the guy that, the nut's and bolt's were flying off, well did you ever think about thigning them up, just a thought. any way this mower works great, i used it today on my 900 sq ft lawn and i could not be more happy, and i have the grass catcher to.

In these modern times, where channel surfing is rapidly becoming the nation’s most popular sport, the American Lawn Mower Company suggests to return to a simpler time with this hand push reel mower. The mower runs solely on manpower, thus saving valuable resources such as gasoline, oil, and electricity while simultaneously eliminating the noise and air pollutions frequently associated with fuel-run lawn mowers. Additionally, this mower combines necessary yard work with exercise, improving both the user’s lawn and cardiovascular health. Owners of hand push mowers also benefit from a lack of fuel expenses, and may also save by allowing grass clippings to mulch for natural fertilization. p This hand push mower provides best results when used on grasses no longer than 3 to 4 inches high. Regular lubrication of the bearings and blades with WD-40 further the success of this mower. The mower features four spider five blades, ball bearing reel. With an adjustable four-section roller, the mower has a cutting length range of 1/2 to 2-1/4 inches. Both the reel and blades are constructed from tempered alloy steel and are held in place by an unbreakable steel plate. The cast iron wheels measure 10 inches in diameter and the mower covers a width of 16 inches. The mower weighs 32 pounds upon shipping with some assembly required. i--Jessica Reuling/i Ideal for Small Lawns. Lightweight and easy to use. It works on my small lawn - Anthony Whiteman - Staten Island
One part of my lawn is 30 x 6, the other patch is 20 x 2. It cuts the grass a little uneven, but I'm just looking to get the grass cut, and clean up the clipings so I can get on with my life. Good for a minialist garden like myself, but if your a perfectionist I would suggest that you get an electric or gas mower.

great quality push mower - Dl Zapanta - Denver, CO
This is a great quality product, my 2nd of the same model. Blades stay sharp, it maneuvers easily, lasts a long time and cuts clean. I highly recommend it and will buy another one when this new one gives up.

I'm very happy with my mower. It took a little while to assemble, but nothing about it was complicated. It's so quiet; I love that I can mow at any time of day without disturbing anyone. Caveats: the instructions warn you about sticks - if you get a lot in your lawn, rake before mowing - they do get caught. Getting them out is easy but blows your momentum. Also, you do have to mow fairly frequently because it's no good on long grass. Keep your edger handy after a lot of good rain. br /That said, this is a terrific tool. Effective, easy to lift and maneuver, and more fun, in my opinion, than a powered mower. I recommend it.

I searched for years to find the right sized mower for my tiny yard and this is "IT"! Pushing it where I need to cut is simple and it does do a good job even if the grass is a bit longer. cleaning it is simple, storage is too.
