We are making a much greater effort to be kinder to our planet in our household. I was warned by my father that I'd regret buying a reel mower. However, I have not regretted it at all. I will admit that it is a little harder and more time consuming. But considering the gas money we save and the consideration we are giving nature, it is one of my favorite purchases ever! We can't use it very easily (though it's not impossible) in deeper grasses, finer grasses, lumpy parts of the yard or where there are branches and plant roots laying around. However, the bulk of our yard can be done fairly easily with this mower. Even the kids (ages 10 14) have been able to contribute to keeping our lawn mowed. My husband used my brother's new reel mower which has a wider cutting deck, some off brand from Home Depot or Menards, but said that ours cuts a lot better. We've used it a handful of times (we live in the country and have a somewhat large yard so don't let yard size deter you) and it hasn't needed sharpening either, unlike my brother's that does require sharpening and they live in town with a small yard.

Brill 78370 Luxus 38 15-Inch Push Reel Mower Feature

  • Push reel mower; 15-inch cut width, height adjustment from .5- to 1.8-inches
  • 16.1 pounds, quiet, easy to push; full-control rigid handle
  • Flame-hardened maintenance-free blades; non-contact cutting system
  • Large top cover protects overhanging flowers and shrubs
  • Made in Germany one-year warranty
Healthy exercise, quiet operation, and a healthier, more attractive lawn, that's what the Luxus 38 Push Reel Mower from Brill has to offer. Perfect for mowing lawns with less than 7,500 square feet, the Luxus 38 weighs just over 16 pounds, making it the lightest, quietest and easiest-to-push hand mower in its class. Ultra-sharp, welded, and flame-hardened blades offer a 15-inch cutting width and won't need sharpening for eight years (on average). p For those who value horticulture above horsepower, the Luxus Push Reel grass cutter is the best choice for a well kept lawn. The vacuum action and dull blades of standard rotary mowers tend to leave behind brown-tops and disturb the natural, interwoven growing pattern that helps grass retain water and crowd out weeds. But the Luxus's non-contact, non-vacuum cutting system produces a beautiful, scissor-cut and rolled look without jeopardizing the roots, so you get ultra-green, super healthy, plush results, every time. p More great features: The cut-height adjusts from .5- to 1.8-inches for a wide variety of mowing applications. An extra rigid handle means optimal power and control. A large metal top-cover protects overhanging flowers and shrubs as the Luxus passes by. Best of all, the ball-bearing-mounted reel spins smoothly with virtually no friction to fight against, so there's even less resistance than gas powered push mowers. The Luxus assembles easily in about five minutes and is backed by a two-year, manufacturer warranty. i--Brian Olson/i Brill Luxus 38, Manual Reel Mower.

Excellent Choice - Brad Kaiser - Spartanburg, SC United States
I was a little apprehensive about purchasing this considering the cost vs. other reel mowers but I must concur with the positive reviews that helped persuade me to make the purchase: this was an excellent choice considering the size of our lawn and the ease of use just as described. It is light weight and a joy to use! Being environmentally friendly is an added bonus and I like the fact that we can mow anytime w/o disturbing the neighborhood.

Scotts 415-16S 16-Inch Elite Push Reel Lawn Mower Review

Pros :br /br /*Provides an excellent workout. Skip a visit or two to the gym and cut the grass instead! (Seriously, you need to be physically fit to use this item. If you have major health issues or physical limitations/disabilities, this product is NOT for you.)br /br /*Since I stopped mowing the lawn with a gas mower, which deposits gasoline and pollutes the environment with noise, and started cutting the grass with this "mower," nature has returned to my backyard! I have always fed the birds, and they are still around, but I have seen snakes for the first time in decades, and butterflies and dragonflies are returning. If you wish to go organic as well, using this "machine" is a great start. (It also helps if you stop fertilizing and using herbicides, pesticides, etc.)br /br /*Adjustable cutting heights. I left mine on factory-set, but you should adjust as you please. If you live in a drier climate, you may wish to adjust the height so that you are left with 2-3 inch high lawn, which conserves water, keeping the lawn greener longer, and also chokes out weeds.br /br /*Easy to assemble. All you have to do is screw on the long-bodied handlebars. br /br /*Easy to maintain. After every mowing, simply put it away. Or if you like, remove the grass clippings from the blades with a gloved hand or use the garden hose to wash off the grass cuttings. Longer grass cuttings will get curled up in between the wheel and lower bar, but it's easy to remove these pieces with your fingers. There is a small black plastic piece that holds together the long bars of the body of the mower. With use, the motions cause this piece to loosen slightly. Simply screw this piece to re-tighten and the bars will join closer again. As far as sharpening the blades, I saw a video online, and it is so easy to do, using a cordless drill! You simply allow the blades to go in reverse for a time and it sharpens them. I have not had to do this yet, so please search the Scotts website for detailed instructions before performing this task. br /br /*Versatile - does not disappoint in any condition - dry or swampy - and it works great on the uneven ground of my yard.br /br /*Well-made and sturdy. Wheels and blades can take plenty of abuse.br /br /*Works on most grass types. My lawn is a mishmosh of seed I have sowed, plus miscellaneous floating seed from neighbors' yards. I don't even know every variety of grass that is in my lawn, but this mower cuts it all.br /br /*No gasoline or oil needed, no yearly lawnmower maintenance, no spark plugs or need for replacement parts, etc.br /br /*Takes up little space, so it's easy to store.br /br /Cons :br /br /*Foam handlebar grips practically wore off during the first mowing! Instead, buy a pair of rubber bicycle handlebar grips - they're inexpensive, they fit nearly perfectly onto the mower handlebars, and they will last a long time.br /br /*Your lawn must be free of debris, such as larger sticks, pine cones and stones. If you do not first remove the sticks, they will get jammed up in the mower blades and it will abruptly stop working.br /br /*Does not cut stemmy weeds such as dandelion. The leafy green part and short-stemmed flowers will be cut, but long-stemmed weeds stubbornly remain.br /br /Commentary :br /br /Like I said, using this item is definitely a workout. The trick is to put all of your weight behind the mower and push it away from you. It is easier on the body, and that way, if you experience resistance (a twig gets caught up in the blades, or you're cutting very long grass), you don't end up on top of the mower. When you experience resistance, simply yank the mower back onto its rollers, thereby clearing the blades. If it persists, you must have a branch caught up in the blades, and you will have to manually remove that. Otherwise, there is no reason to bend anymore than absolutely necessary - this yanking motion will deposit bunched up clippings and smaller twigs back onto the lawn for you.br /br /The longer you allow your lawn to grow, the more intense your workout will be! If allowed to grow too long, say, 5+ inches, you will have to make a few passes and possibly even criss cross the area to get it from all sides. You will experience resistance from the mower, but it's not impossible - just keep at it!br /br /The wider the mower, the less passes you will have to make. I'm happy with the smaller width model because I love the workout. But if you're looking to get the job done faster, try a wider model.br /br /I have owned this for a year and have loved it since the first time I used it. My priorities are having an organic yard, enjoying the outdoors and getting a great workout without having to get on a gym machine. Hence, I love this item. If your priorities are different, you may not love this product.

Happy with my purchase but... - Stephanie J. Merrill - New England
I wish I had known that even a small (a very small) twig will jam the blades and you will have to stop, flip the machine and remove the twig before you can resume mowing. My yard is small, and I have had no trouble pushing the mower but in the back yard, near the big tree (Yes! The one that constantly sheds small twigs), it is really tough going. Other than that, I think this is a really great mower that most anyone can push without problem. As mentioned in other reviews, don't let the grass get long...

I'm very happy with my mower. It took a little while to assemble, but nothing about it was complicated. It's so quiet; I love that I can mow at any time of day without disturbing anyone. Caveats: the instructions warn you about sticks - if you get a lot in your lawn, rake before mowing - they do get caught. Getting them out is easy but blows your momentum. Also, you do have to mow fairly frequently because it's no good on long grass. Keep your edger handy after a lot of good rain. br /That said, this is a terrific tool. Effective, easy to lift and maneuver, and more fun, in my opinion, than a powered mower. I recommend it.

I found this mower locally on sale, and decided to pick it up. I've always been interested in simpler appliances, as well as going a bit green. I was concerned because I have an average sized lawn, but it doesn't take me any longer to mow with this then the old gas-powered John Deere. br /br /Thoughts:br /br /- Very minimal maintenance required. There are ways to adjust the cutting bed and the angle of the cut, but it's ready to go right out of the box.br /br /- Easy to push! I mow every week normally, so I tend to not let the lawn get too huge. I can see how letting it get too long would make life tough, though.br /br /- Spend a few minutes picking up the twigs first. I've got several mature deciduous trees that shed little twigs all the time. Anything approx. the size of a #2 pencil will jam the reels.br /br /- Pretty quiet, though not silent. This model has a 'scissoring' sound which is kind of odd to get used to, but its so much quieter than a gas powered (or even battery powered) mower, I'm fine with it. A little WD-40 on the knife bed quiets things down even more (make it a point to use some regularly on the moving parts; it'll keep the noise down and make it easier to mow with).br /br /- Building it takes 20 minutes; you just put the handle together, set your desired height and its off to the races.br /br / Those are the pertinent details I thought I would mention. There are plenty of resources on the internet on the finer aspects of using a reel mower. Frankly, outside of cleaning my lawn of small twigs, I see no real (reel?) downside to this mower. It's well-built, suitably heavy, cuts nicely, and is virtually maintenance and noise free. Save the gas hog for mulching the leaves in the fall and use this the rest of the year.br /br /Hope this helps!br /

Works great so far! - Anthony C. David -
I'm very happy to say that my mower worked right out of the box. The assembly took about 10 minutes and I didn't have to adjust the blades or do much else to get it going. I've used it three times so far and it works great. It's as easy to push as any motor mower I've ever used. To help the mower cut better, I rake the grass first which gets rid of twigs and such that might jam up the blades. It also helps with the actual cutting since the grass isn't matted down. The smell of fresh raked earth and cut grass in the morning (without the noise, smell of exhaust, and debris flying everywhere) is worth every penny.

I just got it yesterday and put it together this morning, it took about 10 min. and I adjusted the blades to have less contact, as the paint on the blades needs to where off. The mower is well made and cuts great and a lot lower than my power mower.br /I cut my yard two weeks ago with my power mower and it is Bermuda grass and a hybrid mix it turner brown and look very bad.br / The only thing that I would change is to put the bottom of the handle on the mower before you put it together as it is easier to get it on that way and oil the mower before the first use.br / Well, on to my first use, I cut my yard in about 20 min. and it was the easiest that it has been in 3 years the mower is very easy to push and does a great job cutting the grass. I just don't Know what took me so long to try one, I will not go back to my power mower! I would highly recommend it to everyone, it is one fantastic mower.

Very nice American-manufactured lawnmower - voyager2lcats -
I had read a nice review of the American Lawn Mower Company's list of reel mowers and I was convinced this was the right machine for me. I have a centipede lawn and this machine cuts better than any gas or electric mower I own. Neither of them is reliable either, while this machine should go the distance. I purchased the blade sharpening kit as well, so far haven't needed it (I have used it four times already since March). It is lighter than either the gas or electric mower I have, so it is no harder to push nor maneuver. You won't regret buying this from Amazon.com as I got free shipping and delivery was in 5 days. You have to assemble the mower, but that is relatively simple, although the instructions are poor.

I actually bought this about 6 years ago to mow my little condo yard. I was leary, as it looked like something Great Grampa might have used, but it's been extremely handy over the years. Now that I have a yard of my own I use it all the time to get into tight places where I don't want to wrestle with my gas mower. The construction is all steel, very sturdy. Just don't try to use it on very high (over 4 inches) grass, or where there's a lot of twigs; it will get bogged down and you'll get frustrated fast! But if you're keeping up with the grass, and you use it in small areas, it works great!

I chose a push mower over an electric or gas mostly because of convenience and wanting to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Keeping gas in my garage, having to take a lawn mower in for maintenance, or running a cord from the inside of my house to the outside just don't appeal to me. I'd like my lawn and garden to be as sustainable as possible. br /br /Because of the above, I really wanted to be able to give this mower a 5 star rating. But truth be told, after going over my lawn about 4 times with this (and in some areas even more), there are patches of grass in the middle of my yard resembling a bad mullet..I found myself using a rake to try to comb them up so I could shave them off with the mower, kind of like a clean up job after a bad shave... I don't think it's dull blades as the leaves on my lawn were chopped up pretty well. Maybe it's because I let the grass get too long before using this, so I will revisit this review after trying the mower on shorter grass. I was satisfied with how easy it was to push the mower, and putting it together was quite quick too...the handle is held together with just 3 bolts and hooking the handle onto the mower itself was a snap. And I didn't mind having to pick up twigs first but some people might.

Not too heavy - M. Rickey - Yakima, WA
I looked at several push reel mowers before deciding on this one, also sold as the "prison mower." My yard slopes and is full of root bumps, holes, and a lot of unseen spiny seed pods from the sweetgum tree. I was worried this would be too heavy to push uphill but it rolls easily and other than having to heft it up a couple of stairs from the garage, I don't even notice the weight. It cuts grass nicely and plows through the rough patches without getting all dainty. I had to adjust the blades but that was an easy task (follow the directions). A neighbor said, "Oh, you're going back in time!" but I think she's just jealous. With care and some luck, this mower should outlast me. Oh, and it's quiet!!

American Lawn Mower Company 1815-18 18-Inch Reel Mower Review

The handle requires about 15 minutes of tool-free assembly and is not difficult. The hardest part was attaching the two circlips that secure the handle to the mower; they cannot be pressed into their grooves by hand but must be pressed hard with something (I used the tip of pliers to apply the needed pressure, I didn't think to use the included blade adjustment wrench). Amazon's product description states you will need a wrench to assemble, but that is not true, the only tool you will need is 'something' to push those circlips into place. The padding on the handle was already installed, but it is foam rubber and probably will not last long. Once the padding shreds, I won't worry about it, it really isn't needed.br /br /I made a couple test swaths through the grass and found the cutting blade factory adjustments to be perfect. It cuts fairly well across the entire 18 inches, but requires a second pass to get some blades of grass that didn't get cut, and even then a few blades of grass will still stick up. I have bent grass and a bent reel mower might work better than this, I don't know. I found that it cuts through leaves and thin twigs easily, but someone who doesn't rake up a trashy lawn will have problems with trash jamming the reel. It won't chop up paper, cardboard and other garbage, then spit it all over the place like a power mower will.br /br /This mower is noticeably easier to push than my gas mower! The silence is 'golden', just a gentle whirring sound. I can listen to my music while using this mower. NO smelly exhaust; NO hard starting; NO air filter cleaning; NO going to buy gas; NO engine maintenance or repair every 2 or 3 years! One thing I didn't think about when I made this purchase is 'IT DOES NOT KICK UP ANY DUST'! I used to wear a face mask when mowing with gas to keep me from coughing badly from inhaling the dust and shredded grass; but no mask is needed with this mower!br /br /The build quality seems pretty good, but there is some plastic: The wheels, the rear rollers and the roller height adjustment mechanism are the plastic "weak points" of this mower. I am guessing one of the roller height adjusters will break eventually. The rubber tires have a shallow tread that may wear down after much use. The handle has some flex; not the stiff steel shafts I remember from years ago. No, this is not my father's very high quality reel mower that had stiff handles and NO plastic. But it is good enough.br /br / The instruction sheet has a breakdown of ALL parts with part numbers so replacement parts can be ordered from the factory. There is a small wrench included to make cutting blade adjustments. Cutting heighth adjustment is made by wingnuts, no tools needed. The instructions show how to make even finer heighth adjustments (requires removing the wheels), but that won't apply to most of us.br /br /Overall, I like this mower, but I think those plastic heighth adjusters should be made of sturdy metal. If you think you need a more robust reel mower than this, do a search: 'prison lawn mower'. I was tempted to buy one!br /br /ADDED THE SAME DAY: I just noticed the price jumped by more than 11 dollars over what just I paid. If the price keeps going up the higher priced prison lawn mower might not be such a bad deal!

With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, 18-inch cutting width, and 2-inch welded shrub bar, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. Plus, the soft foam cushion on the handlebar is a nice -- and much appreciated -- touch. However, assembly can be a headache, even though the only tool you need is a wrench. The instructions could be clearer, and the handle parts could fit together better. This product is backed by a limited 2-year warranty.

Made in China - GEORGE K. FLOOD - California
I googled lawnmowers made in the USA and came up with a site that said that this brand and model is made in the USA. So I got it. The box clearly says "Made in China." Oh well. Hard to find anything made in the USA anymore. It cuts the lawn OK, though. I'm glad I got this type of non-motorized lawnmower.

So first for the reasons why this Great States mower is a great push reel mower, and is probably the best 0 I've spent in a long time:br /br /1) It's the perfect weight - it's not so heavy that you tire easily using it, and it's not so light that it bounces around and doesn't cut the grass.br /br /2) It's a solid piece of equipment. From what I've read of the Scott's reel mower, the handle is flimsy.br /br /3) It was easy to assemble. Took about twenty minutes altogether, and I'm not especially mechanically inclined.br /br /Now for the reasons why I love having a push reel mower in general:br /br /1) The kids can be outside while I'm mowing. No worries about rocks, etc. being thrown around.br /br /2) Extremely quiet compared to mowers with engines (pretty obvious I suppose).br /br /3) No need to deal with slopping gas around or to smell exhaust from the mower. I really enjoy being able to mow the lawn without feeling like I immediately need to take a shower after doing it.br /br /4) I had some trepidations about how effective a tool this would be, but it cuts right through the grass with ease. I haven't had to mow when the grass is extremely long, but because this mower is so much fun (yes, fun) to use, I don't anticipate the grass getting too long, because I'll be using it so frequently.br /br /We have a yard that is a little over 1/3 of an acre - for anyone who has a lawn that size or up to 1/2 an acre, I would definitely recommend this mower. Anything bigger than that, and personally I'd want a riding lawn mower. Five stars, only because I can't rate it higher than that.

So far so good. - Jeff S -
So far this mower works as well as could be expected. With thicker, deeper grass, sometimes I have to make two passes (in varying directions) to get the grass to my expectations. But, I also did that with the gas mower I had before this one. Overall, I would recommend this product without hesitation. Happy mowing!

Works better than you'd think - orangekay - San Francisco, CA United States
Everyone and their mother will tell you that you can't cut tall grass with one of these things, but they don't know what they're talking about. What they really mean to say is that you can't cut tall grass easily or quickly, but you can do it if you raise the bar to its highest setting and adopt a mowing style similar to vacuuming. You'll probably be worn out before you're even halfway done, but it'll work. br /br /The instructions are terrible and so are the little thumb screws they give you to assemble the handle, but I love everything else about this mower. It's heavy enough to plow over the thick spots without jumping off the ground too often and its blades make a very satisfying sound. I have some concerns regarding the longevity of the plastic roller bars, but they let you order replacements, so I'm not too worried. The satisfaction of getting to fire my landlord's gardener and keep the money I was paying him to do absolutely nothing every month makes it all worth it. br /br /Do yourself a favor and pitch the little plastic wing nuts they give you to secure the carriage bolts in place--they hurt your hands and work loose with vibration all the time. Pick up some 6mm locking nuts and impact drive them on instead.

I purchased this mower from a local retailer to cut my bermuda grass lawn. I don't want to have to break out the big mower anytime the grass needed mowing, and my neighbors like to play in the pools and have barbecues a lot, so I needed something quieter that I could use even in the early hours of the morning.br /br /I think this mower is a little more difficult to push than a regular gas or electric mower, but not much. The main problems with a mower like this are:br /br /1. It doesn't work well when the grass has grown tall. You'll need to mow more often. In return, you'll have a nice, green lawn.br /br /2. Sometimes you have to go over the same patch of grass twice to get it all. I think this is pretty standard for manual reel mowers, but nevertheless this is why I'm giving it only 4 stars out of 5.br /br /3. It doesn't get the edges very well. You'll need a weed trimmer more than you would have otherwise. But I use one even with my regular mower, so it doesn't matter to me.br /br /Contrary to what some sources say, manual reel mowers are fine for dense grasses like bermuda, provided you get the right type. The 7-bladed reel mowers like this one are designed for bermuda and other "bent" grasses.

Great States works great - Adam C. Treen - Fort Riley, KS
I bought this mower because we moved to a townhouse with a small yard AND because it is a much greener alternative to gasoline mowers. This mower works exactly as advertised, and exactly as I remember them working when I was a kid. Thick grass (like big crab grass clumps) will stop it dead if you don't put some speed behind your push, and it won't cut anything taller than six inches. If you are used to lining up your wheel marks for your next pass, that is different too, because the wheels are outside of your cutting path. These are, in my opinion, fair trade-offs for being able to cut my grass in near silence whenever I want with ZERO emissions and no noise pollution.

Quiet and works well - S. Kurup -
I have a fairly small lawn(about 6000sq ft) of bermuda grass. I used the default factory setting and it wasnt cutting much. I adjusted the height to the lowest possible and my lawn looks a lot better now. Like the previous reviewer said you will need an edger/trimmer.
